Long Wave Broadcast Band (LF)Last update: 12/13/2010 |
Langwellen-Rundfunk-BandLetzte Bearbeitung 13.12.2010 |
| The long wave broadcast band (LW, LF) is only in use
in Europe, some regions of Asia and North Africa (ITU region ). Frequency
range 150 kHz to 280 kHz. Interested in other regions of the world? No reference
receiver for long wave band? During night time the long wave is well suited for long distance reception. You live for example in North America (USA or Canada) in the eastern states? In this case at first a good message: You have no problems with interferences by local LW-band stations, but there are some beacon transmitters and other non broadcast transmitters on air in some regions of the world (when the reception in your country is allowed, use these transmitters for testing your receiver). The chances for receiving LF broadcast stations with crystal sets are not very good from America, Australia and East-Asia. During good propagations use a good (long and high placed) antenna and try to receive across the atlantic, while the complete path is in darkness. For East Canada e.g. 189 or 207 kHz (Iceland), for East USA e.g. 252 Khz (Ireland) or 153 kHz (Algeria). But there is a problem with the transmitting time of some LW stations, they stops the transmission at 12:00 PM local time, that is for most European stations 11:00 or 12:00 UTC. You have to try after night fall up to 12:00 PM UTC. What is for example 12:00 PM UTC for your location? For the Eastern USA and Canada it is 07:00 PM. Under these circumstances the best chance for receiving are the winter months. I know, that in North-America only few people are using receivers including long wave band and can not check the propagations. But you can use this Internet site: http://www.chilton.com/scripts/radio/R8-receiver . You find there a high performance Drake R8 communication receiver for remote control by you. You can remote this receiver and listen. The receiver is located in Reston, Virgina (near Washington D.C). Operator Jeff Chilton. Very fine bussines Jeff, thanks. ( I have used this remote receiver many times over the years for verifying the reception of European broadcast stations and my own ham radio transmissions here in Berlin Germany.) With this remote receiver no reception of LW-Stations from Europe, Asia or Africa at 12/12/2010 07:00 CET AM. Perhaps you find on a flea market or on ebay a receiver with the LF broadcast band for reference of your crystal set. |
KW-Bereich in Gebrauch.
